John Galliano’s trip to Egypt in 2003 was a source of inspiration for these Spring-Summer 2004 collection looks evoking the Egypt of pharaohs and the deities they worshipped.
He thereby used many of the attributes of Egypt’s sovereigns, including the nemes, the headdress worn by pharaohs…
…the deshret, Lower Egypt’s headdress…
…the uraeus, the snake which adorned headdresses, whose function was to protect the sovereign…
…and the false beard, which only the pharaoh was entitled to wear.
The Egyptian pantheon was also honored, for instance Anubis the god of death.
Gold, ancient Egypt’s sovereign material due to its everlasting nature, was omnipresent in this collection. This outstanding collection revealed the unrivalled expertise of the House’s ateliers.
It was a continuation of countries imagined by Christian Dior, who himself referred to Egypt in his collections.
